Cawdor Castle is just 15 miles east of Accommodation
Inverness in Inverness and its splendid gardens are open from May to
September, 10am to 5 pm. It is one of the most romantic castles in
Scotland and is still lived in by the Cawdor family. Inside there is a
pleasant air of domesticity making it much more of a home than a museum.
The main tower is 600 years old and the castle itself features in
Shakespeare's Macbeth where the main character becomes Thane of Cawdor
thus fulfilling the witches' prophecy, encouraging him to murder Duncan to
become king. Its walled garden is a special feature of the castle and not
so formal and stately as some.
Cawdor castle is also close to the battlefield of Culloden
where there is an excellent visitor centre which provides exhibits and an
audio visual presentation. In the same area there are also the ancient
Clava Standing stones, an ancient burial ground. |
