Fort George Inverness

Fort George, 11 miles north east of Inverness, is
one of the outstanding artillery fortifications in Europe. It was begun by
the government soon after the 1745 - 46 Jacobite rising to hinder any more
armed threats to Hanoverian law and order. It has been used as a fort and
as a barracks ever since. Fort George is open to the public all year round
and it has a comprehensive collection of artefacts which are of
considerable historical interest.
